NFPA 25 & NFPA 72 Inspection Frequencies

NFPA 25 & NFPA 72 Inspection Frequencies

Note: This guide is an abbreviation of the overall codes for NFPA 25 and NFPA 72. It is important you refer to the full text of NFPA 25 and NFPA 72 for a complete list of devices, test frequencies, and testing procedures.

Unsure how often various fire protection systems need to be inspected? Just like other elements of inspections, inspection frequencies are governed by NFPA codes.

Inspection frequencies for fire sprinkler systems and fire alarm systems are commonly asked after. We have provided a quick reference guide for the various inspection frequencies of Fire Sprinkler Systems, as governed by NFPA 25, and Fire Detection and Alarm Systems, as governed by NFPA 72.

NFPA 25 Inspection Frequencies – Fire Sprinkler Systems

There are seven possible inspection frequencies for a fire sprinkler system. They are:

  1. Daily
  2. Weekly
  3. Monthly
  4. Quarterly
  5. Semi-Annually
  6. Annually
  7. Every 5 Years

The term “inspection” can refer to a visual check of system components (most commonly associated with daily inspections), all the way to thorough inspections where valves are opened and systems are checked for corrosion, obstruction, and performance. The frequency and thoroughness of an inspection is dependent upon the type of system(s) being inspected. Different types of sprinkler systems, made in different years and with different life cycles, can have varying inspection frequencies. Refer to NFPA 25 to ensure you have the right inspection frequency for the systems you inspect.

In-depth inspections and testing require a licensed professional, as they know the various tests to perform and have been professionally trained to test each system. In addition, they are aware of any specialized tests that must be performed per town, city, or state regulations.

If you have questions or concerns regarding the required frequency of your fire sprinkler systems, contact your insurance company, local fire department, or your sprinkler installation company.

NFPA 72 Inspection Frequencies – Fire Detection & Alarm Systems

There are six possible inspection frequencies for fire detection and alarm systems. They are:

  1. Initial/Reacceptance
  2. Weekly
  3. Monthly
  4. Quarterly
  5. Semi-Annually
  6. Annually

Similar to NFPA 25 inspections, the frequency of a fire alarm system inspection depends on the type of equipment, as well as local requirements. For example, building systems not connected to a supervising station are required to be inspected on a quarterly basis, while systems connected to a supervising station are required to be inspected initially and on an annual basis.

More frequent, visual inspections of LEDs, fuses, the primary power supply, and interface equipment are common and can be performed on up to a weekly basis, in addition to the required inspection interval for the system or type.

If you have questions or concerns regarding the required frequency of your fire sprinkler systems, contact your insurance company, local fire department, or your fire alarm installation company.
